Amazon Publishing for Authors

KDP rules, exclusivity obligations, content sharing limits, and how NotaeLibrary fits into your Amazon publishing strategy.

This guide is for reference only. Amazon's terms change regularly. Always verify current policies at kdp.amazon.com before making publishing decisions.

๐Ÿ“š 1. What is KDP?

Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) is Amazon's self-publishing platform. Authors upload manuscripts and cover art; Amazon makes the book available for sale on Kindle (digital) and optionally as print-on-demand paperback or hardcover. You retain copyright of your work. KDP is free to use โ€” Amazon earns a revenue share on each sale.

There are two publishing tracks:

TrackExclusivityRevenue share (Kindle)Key benefit
KDP (standard)None โ€” publish anywhere35% (below $2.99 or above $9.99) ยท 70% ($2.99โ€“$9.99)Full freedom to publish on other platforms
KDP SelectKindle exclusive for 90 days (auto-renewing)70% on qualifying titles + Kindle Unlimited page readsKindle Unlimited access + promotional tools (Free Days, Countdown Deals)

You enrol individual titles into KDP Select โ€” not your entire catalogue. You can have some books in Select and others not.

๐Ÿ”’ 2. KDP Select & Kindle Unlimited โ€” Exclusivity Rules

When you enrol a title in KDP Select, you agree to make the Kindle edition exclusively available through Amazon for the duration of each 90-day enrolment period. This is the single most important rule to understand.

What "exclusive" means

The exclusivity applies to the digital edition only. It means the digital content of that book must not be available for sale, free download, or free reading anywhere else โ€” including your own website, other retailers (Apple Books, Kobo, Google Play, Barnes & Noble), subscription services, or any other platform.

Exclusivity covers digital content โ€” not print. A paperback or hardcover edition published elsewhere (IngramSpark, Draft2Digital print, etc.) does not violate KDP Select exclusivity. Only the digital/ebook edition is restricted.

KDP Select enrolment is per title, per 90-day term

  • Each term is 90 days and auto-renews unless you opt out before the renewal date.
  • You can opt out from the KDP dashboard at any time, but the current term must complete before the restriction lifts.
  • After a term ends and you do not renew, you are free to publish the digital edition on other platforms immediately.

Kindle Unlimited (KU)

KDP Select titles are automatically included in Kindle Unlimited โ€” Amazon's subscription reading programme. You earn money from the Kindle Unlimited Global Fund based on pages read (KENPC โ€” Kindle Edition Normalized Page Count). You do not receive the standard per-sale royalty for KU reads; you receive a per-page-read rate instead.

๐Ÿ“ 3. How Much Content Can You Share Outside Amazon?

Amazon's KDP Select terms do not specify an exact word-count or percentage limit for excerpts. The operative phrase in the KDP Select terms is:

"โ€ฆwe ask that you not make the content available in digital format anywhere else during the term of your enrolment."

This means the full text must not be available digitally elsewhere. However, short excerpts for promotional purposes are generally accepted under the principle of fair use and Amazon's own promotional guidance. The commonly applied industry guideline:

Content typeGenerally safeNotes
Short excerpt (up to ~10%)โœ“ YesFor promotion, review, or editorial purposes. Not a free substitute for the full book.
Sample chapter (1โ€“3 chapters)โœ“ Yes (with caution)Amazon itself provides a Kindle sample of ~10โ€“15% of the book. Sharing a similar sample on your own site is generally accepted. Do not make this freely downloadable as an ebook file.
Full book free on your siteโœ— NoDirect violation of KDP Select exclusivity.
Full book on another retailer (Apple, Kobo)โœ— NoDirect violation. Amazon has terminated accounts for this.
Serialised partial content (ongoing)โš  Use cautionPosting chapters serially on a blog or platform like Wattpad/Royal Road may violate exclusivity if the total approaches or exceeds the full text.
Print edition on other platformsโœ“ YesExclusivity applies to digital only. IngramSpark paperback alongside KDP Select Kindle is fine.
Reading the book on your own YouTube/videoโœ“ LimitedShort passages for review/commentary are fine. Full read-along videos likely violate the spirit of exclusivity.
The 10% rule of thumb comes from Amazon's own Kindle sample feature โ€” Amazon delivers roughly the first 10% of a KDP Select book as a free sample. Keeping your external promotional excerpts within a similar range is the safest approach.

โœ… 4. What You CAN Do Outside Amazon

Even with a title in KDP Select, you can:

  • Share short excerpts (up to ~10%) on your author website, social media, newsletters, or blog for promotional purposes.
  • Sell or give away print editions (paperback, hardcover) through any channel โ€” IngramSpark, your own store, events.
  • Use the KDP cover and description on your author site and in your marketing materials.
  • Link to your Amazon book page from anywhere. Amazon encourages this.
  • Submit to ARC services (Advance Review Copies) as digital files โ€” ARCs are not considered "commercial digital distribution." Most ARC platforms (NetGalley, BookSirens, etc.) are accepted.
  • Distribute directly to individual reviewers as personal PDF/EPUB files โ€” one-to-one distribution for review purposes is not retail distribution.
  • Post on your own website as a sample chapter page โ€” a non-downloadable HTML reading experience of the first chapter or two is widely used and generally accepted.
  • Use NotaeLibrary to link your book and show metadata โ€” we do not host or distribute the digital content of your KDP book. Your Amazon link drives readers directly to Amazon.

๐Ÿšซ 5. What You CANNOT Do While in KDP Select

  • Publish the full ebook on any other digital retailer or platform (Apple Books, Kobo, Google Play, Barnes & Noble, Smashwords, Draft2Digital ebook distribution, etc.).
  • Offer the full digital content as a free download on your own website.
  • Enrol the same title in another subscription reading service (Scribd, Storytel, etc.).
  • Post the full text on a serialisation platform (Royal Road, Wattpad, Scribble Hub) โ€” even if free and not monetised.
  • Host the full text in a publicly accessible online document (Google Docs, Dropbox public link, etc.).
Amazon enforces this. They actively scan the internet for digital content that matches enrolled titles. Violations can result in removal from KDP Select, royalty clawbacks, and in serious or repeated cases, account termination. If you discover you have a violation, remove the content and contact KDP support immediately.

๐Ÿ”“ 6. Non-KDP Select: Your Full Rights

If your title is on KDP but not enrolled in KDP Select, you have full distribution freedom for the digital edition. You can:

  • Publish the ebook simultaneously on Apple Books, Kobo, Google Play, Barnes & Noble, and any other platform.
  • Use wide-distribution aggregators (Draft2Digital, Smashwords/Draft2Digital merger, IngramSpark ebook distribution).
  • Offer the ebook directly from your own website (Payhip, Gumroad, WooCommerce, etc.).
  • Serialise on Wattpad, Royal Road, Scribble Hub, or any platform.
  • Include in any subscription service.
  • Give the full ebook away free from your own site.

You retain copyright regardless of Select status. KDP only licences Amazon the right to distribute โ€” it does not transfer ownership of your work.

๐Ÿ“– 8. NotaeLibrary & Amazon โ€” How It Works

When you import a KDP book into NotaeLibrary, we store the book's metadata (title, description, cover image, ASIN, Amazon URL) โ€” not the book's content. Readers who discover your book here are directed to Amazon to purchase or borrow via Kindle Unlimited.

NotaeLibrary does not host, stream, or distribute the text of your KDP books. Importing a book here does not affect your KDP Select exclusivity in any way.

Sample chapters on NotaeLibrary

NotaeLibrary supports uploading sample chapters for your Amazon books โ€” a non-downloadable reading preview. This is consistent with the promotional excerpt allowance described in Section 3. Samples should not exceed approximately 10% of the full text, and the sample experience drives readers to purchase on Amazon rather than substituting for it.

โ˜‘๏ธ 9. Quick Compliance Checklist

Before importing a KDP book or sharing content externally, run through this checklist:

โ˜

Is your book in KDP Select?

Check your KDP bookshelf. If yes, read the Select rules before sharing digital content anywhere.

โ˜

Are you sharing more than ~10% of the text externally?

If yes โ€” and the book is in Select โ€” you may be violating exclusivity. Reduce to an excerpt.

โ˜

Is the full ebook available on another retailer?

If yes and the book is in Select, remove it immediately or opt out of Select before the next 90-day term.

โ˜

Are you using affiliate links on a web page?

Add your FTC disclosure statement. Do not use affiliate links in email or paid ads.

โ˜

Are you linking your book from NotaeLibrary?

Safe. NotaeLibrary stores metadata only โ€” no content hosting, no exclusivity issue.

โ˜

Are you uploading a sample chapter to NotaeLibrary?

Safe if โ‰ค 10% of the book and non-downloadable. Drives readers to Amazon.

โ˜

Are you distributing ARCs?

Safe. One-to-one reviewer distribution is not retail distribution.

โ˜

Selling print edition on IngramSpark?

Safe. KDP Select exclusivity applies to digital editions only.
